**My Personal Journey with ITP (Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura)**
*By J.C.*
It is my sincere wish that this blog will reach the right people, at the right time, and in the right way.
**Understanding ITP**
In the United States, ITP is considered a rare disease, affecting only about 10 out of every 100,000 people. Globally, it affects less than 1% of the population. I was diagnosed with ITP in 1997, and at that time, I didn’t know anyone else battling this illness. ITP affects the immune system, causing low platelet counts as the body’s white blood cells mistakenly attack red blood cells, thinking they are foreign invaders.
**My Journey**
Initially, I was advised to monitor my platelet count without taking any action. However, as time passed, my platelet count continued to decline, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue. For example, not being able to make from the parking lot to the door’s entrance – without sitting down to catch my breath. My hematologist prescribed high-dose glucocorticoids, which temporarily raised my platelet count and improved my condition. However, due to the significant side effects of long-term use, this was not a solution.
**Discovering Ayurveda**
Feeling scared and unsure of what to do next, I stumbled upon Ayurveda through an acquaintance’s recommendation. Ayurveda is ancient medicine, originating from the Indian subcontinent, using herbal medicines, special diets, meditation, yoga, Tai Chi (what I use as well) and more. Despite my skepticism stemming from a scientific background, I decided to explore this holistic approach to healing.
**Embracing Holistic Healing**
The Ayurvedic practitioner I consulted approached my treatment holistically, considering my entire being—body, mind, and spirit. Through personalized assessments, including pulse diagnosis (done on every visit) she determined the imbalances within my system and prescribed herbs and remedies to restore harmony. Despite my initial doubts, I gradually embraced the idea that what I put into my body profoundly affects my health, well-being and as a result – ITP becomes managed.
**A Shift in Mindset**
I learned that energy, whether positive or negative, impacts my body’s functioning. By eliminating addictive and harmful foods like red meats, sugar, and flour from my diet, I experienced a positive shift in my health (including mental). While ITP can be a fatal disease, I refuse to lose hope. My journey has taught me that combining Western medical logistics with Eastern holistic approaches like Ayurveda offers a comprehensive solution.
**A Message of Hope**
Since my diagnosis in the ’90’s, I’ve traversed a challenging path, but I’m here today, thriving and determined. While ITP may pose uncertainties, I have found solace in knowing that both Eastern and Western medicine provide me with protection and support. My hope is that by sharing my journey with you – I can offer peace and guidance to those battling this silent stalker.
**Closing Thoughts**
If this blog resonates with even one person struggling with ITP, then my mission is fulfilled. Remember, within the darkness of illness, there is always light and hope.
Peace and Light,
J.C.
